Functional Communication Training

🗣️ Functional Communication Training

Teaching Communication with Purpose, Meaning, and Joy

At Smart Scholars, we use functional communication training (FCT) to support children in expressing their needs and becoming more confident communicators. FCT is an approach within Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) that teaches a useful communication response to replace challenging behavior that serves the same purpose.

Communication should be functional, meaningful, and rewarding. That's why our FCT sessions are built around a child-centered, play-based model that encourages active participation and natural engagement. Children practice communication through activities and interactions that are meaningful to them.

🔍 What Is Functional Communication Training?

FCT starts with understanding what a child is trying to access or avoid through a challenging behavior. A functional behavior assessment helps identify that purpose. A communication response is then chosen that meets the same need and is practical for the child to use.

Depending on the child's skills and needs, this may involve speech, signs, pictures, or a communication device. The aim is to give the child a clear, accessible way to communicate, with examples such as:

• Asking for a break when an activity feels difficult.

• Requesting help with a task.

• Asking for attention or interaction.

• Requesting a preferred toy or activity.

The response is taught through supported practice and reinforcement. As the child becomes more confident, support can be gradually reduced and practice extended to everyday routines. Each plan is individualized; FCT is not a general language curriculum or a substitute for every type of communication support.

🎯 Our Goal

Our goal at Smart Scholars is to help each child communicate their needs in a way that is understood and effective. We support useful communication while working to reduce the child's reliance on challenging behavior.

Using play, natural routines, and child-led activities, we make room for practice at the child's pace. Every step of the way, we prioritize a child-centered approach that values autonomy, curiosity, and joy in learning.
